I'm 13 years old and i love the idea of surfing. I live in Houston,Texas and about an hr. away from the Gulf.
I've always wanted to try to surf. I need camps and surf lessons that can really challenge me and help me learn to surf.
Am I to young? Where are good beaches i can work on? I want to maybe try a surf competion when i get good, are there any work outs and things i can do to help my surfing and get in better shape for it?

I started at 14. That was 43 years ago. My grandchildren (ages 6 thru 10) are surfing now. So, I guess 13 is neither too young, nor too old. The Gulf is just about the worst place to surf in the US. But, there are lots of hard core, dedicated (and VERY PATIENT) surfers there who wait for good ride-able days. Get to a beach town, there a dozens of good Gulf coast surf shops, where they can get your started the right way, with lessons. Ignore most of what people will tell you on line, a surf shop is the right place to start.

You are the perfect age to start surfing! I started when I was 10 years old and after 25 years of surfing, I am just as in love with it as the first day I tried it. I love it so much that I am now a surfboard shaper in Santa Barbara, California.

There are plenty of great waves to learn on in Texas and websites like www.surfline.com can help you find where the waves are best! Learn to use the surf and weather forecasting tools. That knowledge is one of the most important for a surfer to have!

The best exercise for surfing is to surf as much as you can! Eat healthy, stretch for strength and flexibility and swim when you cant get to the beach or the surf is flat.

So get out there and feel free to reply with any other questions or comments. You can learn more about surfing, surfboards and design at my website www.j7surfdesigns.com

No, you are not too young. People start surfing at much younger ages than you. For exercises - swim alot. You want to be able to paddle hard and for a long time, and still have "gas in the tank" to keep paddling to catch that wave.

Also - and this is most important - take lessons. You will learn way way way faster with even a couple lessons (or surf camp). Plus, the instructor will set you up on a board that you can actually stand on and catch waves on (the more waves you catch, the faster you get good).

When it is time to buy a board, ask your instructor what he/she recommends. Also, talk to the dudes in the surf shop as well. Tell them your skill level - they will be able to tell you what to get for your skill level and the types of waves you are surfing.

properly, in case you elect to earnings a thank you to surf, skateboarding could be a great help. It helps you get use to the feel of being on a board, and it helps along with your stability. i could recommend renting a longboard, and then taking on instructions, often close by surf shops have mini-camps, and each so often you could only locate somebody keen to instruct you. in the experience that your fairly into surfing, then you definately can purchase a board, I desire procuring a used board till you get stable at it, reason beginner's are actually not often the appropriate, and there plenty greater possibly to wipe out, which may bring about messing up your board, and you do no longer elect to waste funds on a board that gets beat up. once you're stable at swimming, then you definately could have not got any concern with getting available and wiping out each so often. don't be scared, it is not as undesirable as human beings make it out to be. consistently be cautiousus for sharks, even regardless of the incontrovertible fact that the possibilities are high fairly uncommon for a shark attack, you will extremely be risk-free then sorry. the 1st couple of circumstances you pass out, pass with a chum who knows a thank you to swim, or somebody who surfs, in case something undesirable is going down. only make confident to have exciting and be risk-free ! :)

your so not to young. i know ppl who started at like seven. just find a surf shop you feel really comfy with and go surfing w/them. ask them to teach you like what sets are and which ones are good not just how to get up on a wave. try smaller waves at first like 3 ft waves. get a indo board it helps with your balance. just try to be able to ccontrol your body really good.
