I would suggest taking lessons before you buy a board. This will ensure you like the sport and that you won't be a hazard to others when you go surfing by yourself. Always start with a longboard as that is the easiest and fastest way to learn how to surf.

A liquid shredder foam board is great for a beginner to learn all the basics and great for that waves height or if you don't want to get a foam board you can get a longboard (anywhere from 8-10 feet long). Just go to your local surf shop and theyll take care of you.

don't sweat it. anything long will do. all the fuss about having soft boards (g boards) for newbies is unnecessary. in the size waves you should be riding just any old longboard will do. my first board costed $20 at a garage sale, it was shaped in the 70's and had chunks missing everywhere. still own and love that board.
