Hi, Its good that your honest about your ability, its better to be honest and learn, than to lie and fail. for the future though don't ask surfing questions on yahoo. There are a lot of untrustworthy people on this site and you need to be careful.

Firstly have you taken any surf lessons? Before you even think about buying a surfboard you need to be comfortable riding one. By taking a surf lesson you will learn the fundamentals such as the pop-up (an explosive push-up which takes you straight to you feet), this is the hardest part of surfing to learn (in my opinion), its takes a lot of perseverance and dedication. You will not get standing up by watching videos on youtube or even reading magazines. You have to be out in the water with a surf instructor who will teach you how to do it correctly (though afterwards you can practice it on dry land). Another thing that you will learn is paddle the board, this believe it or not can be done wrongly as well even though its similar to the front crawl swimming stroke. Many people I see out in the water sit too far forward or too far back on the board causing their stroke to be inefficient and slow. This can be learnt very easily in one or two lessons.

The board you will learning on will be a foam/softtop longboard, NOT a P.U (Polyurethane) shortboard. This is because longboards have loads of volume (buoyancy) in them making paddling very easy meaning you can catch waves easily, therefore you can catch more waves! They are also very long so if you mess up a pop-up they will 'forgive' you for that mistake. P.U/epoxy shortboards are near enough the exact opposite of a longboard. They have very little volume so paddling takes a lot of strength and stamina because the board sits just below the surface of the water. They are very short so if you make one mistake it will chuck you off the wave. Though I'm only saying their bad for beginners. I found that the small amount volume does come in useful when im 'duck-diving' under big waves. Its also very maneuverable when Im doing floaters, snaps etc You will progress onto these when you become better.

For now though the foamie is best for you. When you come round to buying it, I beg you PLEASE don't buy off the internet. Why? because the truth is that your staring at a couple of pics and you have no idea what it's like to surf on. After-all you the one who's going to be riding it! Go to a surf school/shop where the surfers will be able to select one according to your weight (height is irrelevant), you can them take it out for a 'test drive' and see if you like it + you should be able to take it home straight away!

I hope this helps and good luck!

Where to but cheap surfboards? The best place to buy cheap Surfboards online is at Amazon.com who have a massive collection to choose from at amazing prices from a website you can trust.

Give Online shopping for a surfboard a try if you know what size and style of board you are after:

You will find what you are looking for from short boards to paddle boards in popular brands like Liquid Shredder and 9 Fish Surfboards.

The length of your surfboard is the key issue when choosing a surfboard. Surfboard length is dependent on a few things.

ABILITY - The first is ability, in general, the bigger the board the easier it is to catch waves.

WATER TIME - A surfer who only surfs occasionally will need a bigger board than one who surfs regularly. This comes down to paddle fitness and balance, the more time your spending in the water, the more waves you will catch and less waves you will fall off. A board that is too small will hold back a surfer's improvement and probably result in frustration, so if in doubt it is best to go for something slightly larger.

WEIGHT - Your weight will also determine what length board you should choose. The heavier you are the generally the longer the board you require:

If you know what you are looking for I would recommend buying a surfboard online as its a great way to save money and the selection is generally far better than what you will find at your local surf shop.

well i think local surfshops are always the place to start. most should have a friendly, knowledgeable staff that is their to help steer you in the right direction. also, most shops have a decent selection of used-boards that have been traded in. these used boards generally fall in the price range of what you're talking about.

also pawn shops can be a place to look. you should be able to haggle with the prices there.

craigslist has become popular over the last few years as well.

at least at the surfshops, most employees there are going to look out for your best interests, whereas at the pawn or craigslist those people aren't going to quite care as much.

good luck and hope you find what you are looking for.
