Don't move if you're going to move to the west coast just for the surf. First, learn to surf. Then, if you really like surfing, see where you fit in on the West coast. North California has pretty much the same weather you get in New York in the early fall for most of the year, and warms up in the summer. So-Cal (Southern California) stays pretty warm and has the more famous surf areas and culture in the continental US. Both the LA and San Diego areas have a lot of surf, an urban setting and a very dominant surf culture. And unless you're planning on becoming a beach bum, and working either year round and only making enough to live off of, and surf, or working on big ships during a portion of the year and still barely making it. You'll need a good job, one with a good salary, if you're just starting to really get into surfing, it can get expensive (board, wetsuit, medical bills, accesories, and other gear, as well as having to replace or fix the board when there's major dings or it breaks, which can happen). Figure out what'll work best for you in the long run, 'cause if you're flipping burgers all day, they won't let you take off when the nice swells start rolling in.

RE:

I want to learn to surf, but it's pretty cold on the east coast right now. My dad was telling me about indoor surfing lessons. Does anyone know anything about them, and/or possibly any locations? Thanks!

You wont learn to surf from it but it looks fun. Really the hardest part of learning to surf is getting up, and you can't do that indoors. Don't listen to mr 'learn to swim first' because i assume that if your learning to surf u can swim well, just don't charge big waves before you're ready. I would love to try indoor but you won't learn to surf from it, but im sure it will be fun if you find a place, and it can't hurt to try it. if you wanna start practicing for summer, do yoga to strengthen balance and core, sounds dumb but it helps a lot. but honestly the best way to learn is to get out there, buy a wetsuit if you have to. Good luck to ya, hope u get to surf soon!

Indoor surfing isn't surfing. It may be fun, but it is nothing like surfing.Surfing is an ocean sport, that should only be practiced by persons who are already competent ocean swimmers. Swimming in a pool is neat, but it's not ocean swimming, with undertows, rip tides and sometimes BIG waves. I have seen lots of great pool swimmers get rescued. So, my first tip on how to surf is to be at home in the ocean. There are way too many dangerous people in the water now. They are a danger to themselves and other surfers, don't join their ranks. We don't know too much about you. Maybe you already have the ocean skills. You will have plenty of time to start when the weather warms up.

Please don't pay any attention to the jimman. Perhaps he plays at surfing, but after 45 years of surfing, I have seen too many people get in trouble because they don't know their limitations and really don't understand the ocean. I rescued too many expert "pool" swimmers not to understand the difference.
