Surfing in california at the time of year?

Is it possible? Im going to san fran on the 21 st to surf the waves and have fun. Is it good at this time of year? Or is the water to cold?

The water is too cold here all year long. You really need a wetsuit to go surfing, even in the Summer. Most of California is like that, except for a relatively small part between LA and San Diego that gets a warm current from Japan.



I think waves are bigger in the Winter. Certainly surfing is done year round, even on blustery Winter days.

The water is always cold in Cali! But I find that the waves can be better in the winter...so it's still a good time to go! :) (It's always a good time to go surfing <3 ) But I suggest getting a wet suit. And if you can't do that, at least wear a shirt. But a suit would be better. Have fun and get some great waves!

i live in sacramento,(and hour away from san francisco) so go up to san francisco a lot to surf. the water will be cold, but its always cold.but, wearing a 4/3 wetsuit its fine. i went up last weekend and the waves were great! i would just check the weather forecast because the waves can get really choppy when its raining and windy. have fun!
